So this is the rumor, Hulu wants to offer a premium subscription plan for it’s web/tv service. $9.99 a month would get you access to a larger back catalog of shows and presumably_ (though not confirmed)_ no advertising.
It’s not really a bad idea, but… in order for me to want to pay for it, I’m going to want to see the following included.
1) I need access on my real tv. Send it to xbox, ps2, tivo, Roku, whatever… make those deals so that I can watch Hulu on my actual TV.
2) I want access on my smart phone, stream it to my Android, Iphone, Windows Phone 7 phone. Obviously lower quality is ok but let me get at it from my mobile, and I’d even buy the app from you to do it.
3) I want access to all the content, Not just NBC, ABC & Fox, you need to get CBS on board too, as well as full shows (enough with the clips) from Discovery, Food Network, Travel Channel, BBCAM, Disney, Etc…
4) I’d be interested in premium content possibly for extra cost or subscription. Let me subscribe to just one HBO series for a few bucks more a month, that would be nice.
5) Include Non TV based content sources in the deal. You really want to be my one stop video entertainment shop? Lets make some deals with TWiT, Revision 3, happy time magic hour, etc. I know that content is already free, but to have access to everything I watch in one app would be worth my while, and my money.
Put all that together and yeah I’d pay $9.99 for it. Heck hit 3 out of 5 of my demands and I’d give it some strong consideration.
Oh and one more thing of note Hulu, you can keep the ads in. Yup, the advertising you have now is short to the point and fairly unobtrusive, it’s probably the best video advertising on the internet right now. So i’d pay you for service and let you leave the ads in place. How about that for a win win.
