Going Green is a good idea, right? Perhaps not always.
We have seen them around here for a few years now. Traffic lights with the new LED Cluster bulbs in them. It makes sense, the LED’s are considerable cheaper to run, but better than that they last for ever so you don’t have crews out all the time chasing blown bulbs in street lamps. And they run cool, but oh wait that’s not always a good thing…
Yeah it seems the old hot running incandescent traffic light bulbs had one advantage especially in the northern half of the country. They melt snow that builds up in the lights.
The new LED bulbs don’t generate heat, well not enough to melt snow anyway, and several Norther States are starting to report trouble with this. There are even some traffic accident deaths starting to be blamed on these now snow covered traffic lights.
Until some one invents an LED traffic light bulb with a built in temperature sensing heater, the rule is to go back to what you were all taught in Driver’s Education.
If there is any question treat the traffic signal as a stop sign.
oh and while we are on the subject of using what we were taught in Driver’s Ed, how about using the turn signal people… you know like everytime you are turning…. Just saying…
