Now this is an interesting new start up, that could just take off even in this down economy.
Introducing Square.
Square is a credit card payment system that will connect to almost any connected mobile device to allow you to take credit cards payments for your business, for your personal projects/hobbies, for your garage sale, whatever.
The genius is the hardware, a small square piece of plastic with a card reader on it. What makes it great is that it connects to any connected mobile device via the headphone jack.
It appears they have a working version for the iPhone already and according to their website they are looking to high software engineers to build versions for Android and Blackberry as well.
The square payment backend sounds almost to good to be true as well. You sign up for the service and there are no contracts, no monthly fees, or hidden charges. Square just takes their percent (I would assume paypal like percents, but it’s not stated) on whatever you use no matter how often or little you use it.
Simple.
I love this idea, this makes the barrier to entry for anyone to take credit cards for any reason, simple.
From the site:
_
“In February 2009, Jim McKelvey wasn’t able to sell a piece of his glass art because he couldn’t accept a credit card as payment. Even though a majority of payments has moved to plastic cards, accepting payments from cards is still difficult, requiring long applications, expensive hardware, and an overly complex experience. Square was born a few days later…”_
Hey Square let me know if you need beta testers for Android, I love the idea of this and would love to help out anyway I can.
