Did Intel just jump into the cell phone market? I think they did.

Moblin is a linux based operating system designed for Mobil Internet Devices, Netbooks and Nettops. Optimized to run on Intel’s atom processors.

But now Intel just announced at IDF2009 that they have made a version of it designed specifically for Atom Based Cell phones.

Another linux based phone OS is big enough news but, intel Atom based cell phones is a shocking revelation.

I suspect this will be a specification and intel will allow other hardware makers to put moblin on phones they make. But still this furth fractures the booming smart phone market.

Once upon a time there was Palm, then came windows Mobile & Blackberry and it was ok. But iPhone happened and our world was rocked, and the Palm died from the shock. Then came Google’s android. Palm miraculously reinvented itself, and now… now… Intel shows up.

Oh and if you are in Europe there is still Nokia and Symbian.

The hand held business is getting more confusing by the minute.
