I was beginning to think that T-Mobile was going to be the exclusive carrier of Google Android based handsets.  But looky here Sprint is next major carrier to roll out a handset and it looks to be a sharp redesigned version of the HTC Hero.

The Hero runs android but with HTC’s own “Sence” UI on top of it, which admittedly makes the phone a thing of beauty but also is rumored to slow it down a ton.

What’s really sort of interesting to me though is that Sprint is pricing this under the price of their flagship Palm-Pre.   Just $180 with a 2yr contract lets you walk out with a phone based on a free and open operating system.

Perhaps it’s because Sprint has been circling the drain for a year or so now, but man these guys really seem to be on the ball, at least with getting the best non-iPhone smart phones out the door.

Verizon seems to be resting on it’s best network laurels a bit too much lately for my taste.
