Looks like there is an upgraded version of the Cell Triple Core processor going into the new slimmer console.

Developed jointly by IBM, Toshiba, & Sony, the cell procesor was originally touted as a selling point of Sony’s flagship entertainment console, but a lack of titles, a consistantly high price, and a user interface that has lagged behind the Xbox 360, has kept the unit from taking the worlsd by storm the way the Sony Playstation and PS2 did.

But now… now they may be on to something. A $299 price point, a design that although may not be “stackable” at least fits on top of other electronics, and… it’s still the best darn Blu-Ray player for the money. They may just have a hit on their hands for the holiday season.

Is it too late? No, I don’t think so, we still have at least two more years before we are due for a console refresh by any of the companies. If Blu-Ray has truly won the battle and Sony markets this right, they could gain market share by selling this as a Blu-Ray player that “also plays games.” At $299 it’s a heck of an up sell from the budget Blu Ray systems that are starting to emerge.
