Updating our previous story, the speculation across the interwebs is that it was “The Russians” that started the giant DDoS attack that took down Twitter and caused problems for Facebook, You Tube, and Live Journal as well.

Really? That’s the best you can do you so called security “experts”?

Rumor is that Russian “hackers” were out to silence pro-Georgian blogger Cyxymu on the one year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Georgia.

So, are we to believe this is some sort of government “KGB” style attempt to silence one person’s voice for one day? So the answer was to try and take down every single internet service this person belonged too? really?

I’m sorry but I have more faith in the intelligence of Russian Intelligence than this. I’m not buying it.

Although it does make a great premise for a fall TV show of some sort. Perhaps we’ll see a version of this in the season premier of “Chuck.”

The link in the title is to SocialMediaToday, where Lloyd Gofton writes an even more scathing article than I on the ridiculousness of this explanation. He quotes Graham Cluley of Sophos trying to explain exactly how a DDoS attack can shut down a website.

Last night I was trying to explain in laymens terms how a DDoS works to my wife, and the quote by Mr. Cluley does is perfect.

“It’s a bit like 15 fat men trying to get through a revolving door at the same time - nothing can move.”

So anyway, I still say it was classic extortion. Some gang of cyber junkies with access to some big bot nets (patch your systems people) tried to take down twitter for cash. Everyone else got caught in the collateral damage.

What do you think?
