You had to know this was coming. The Palm Pre, the only non Apple device to sync directly with iTunes, can do so no more.
iTunes 8.2.1 (released today) breaks the ability of the Palm Pre to pretend it’s an iPod and sync with Apple’s iTunes software. The Pre had this ability because when put into media sync mode it actually told iTunes that it was an iPod. Well one of the so called “fixes” of 8.2.1 was an update to how Apple identifies it’s hardware for sync. *Poof*
The question is now, can Palm simply push an update through it’s system to fix what Apple broke? And do they really want to start that sort of cat and mouse tactic with Apple?
iTunes Syncing is a big feature of the palm Pre, so I would think Palm has to do something, to avoid a flurry of angry people who are dependent on iTunes for their media. But the safer road may be to just come out with their own software based syncing solution.
I use The Missing Sync, to connect my Blackberry Storm to iTunes on my Mac. It’s a third party solution that will sync iTunes and other softwafe on my Mac with my Storm. RIM even has their own software that will sync with iTunes on a Mac and PC. I don’t see why Palm doesn’t do the same. Perhaps they already have this software lined up an ready to go for when this fateful day happens.
What do you think? Will Palm send an Pre Update to fix this? Release their own syncing software to work with iTunes? Or just pretend this never happened.
