Finally a decent deal on a subsidised netbook.  Sort of.

This is as good as an subsidy gets.  You sign up for a two years of Sprints fast and reliable EVDO network (the same network that powers the Kindle), and for less than a buck you get to take home a Compaq netbook too.

It’s a good deal if you were looking to get EVDO access.  If you are looking to just get a netbook, $400 is a lot cheaper than the $1200+ that you will shell out for two years for the service.

The only caveat I see, is the extremely volatile state of the wireless broadband world.  Sprint’s WiMax 3g network is already being rolled out. AT&T & Verizons LTE network is scheduled for rollout next year.  So half way through your contract you may find that your super fast EVDO access is suddenly the slowest thing on the block.

Then of course there is the fact that in two years time that nebook will be looking real long in the tooth.

But… If you need basic broadband for surfing and email whereever you are, and you just need a basic computer to do it on…. you could do worse than this.

It’s a heck of a lot better than what AT&T and Verizon are offering for a similarly subsidized netbook.
