This is something I have had on my radar for a while, and thankfully it is not only still moving forward, it’s hit an Alpha release, today.
Jolicloud is an Operating System build from the ground up for netbooks. It’s based on Debian and Ubuntu Linux but is a full fleged OS supporting Bluetooth, Wifi, Webcams, USB etc.
Jolicloud boasts an elegant interface, and from what I have seen from the pics it does look pretty good.
One Click Application install, including some Windows based applications thanks to built in WINE support.And simple updates of applications and the OS.
Built in Social networking in the OS, so you can see what apps your friends are liking the most.
Optimized to take advantage of web based applications, and the web in general on the small netbook screen.
But what I like about it most is it’s built to sync with another computer. You run jolicloud Home base on your main PC and you can manage your applications, your documents, music, videos, etc, from the Home Base or the netbook.
Because of the syncing ability you never lose anything. Even if your netbook is lost, stolen, or damaged. Just sync your new computer with your existing “homebase” and it will be right where you left off on the old one.
Very very cool stuff. I’d be downloading Alpha version to try on my Dell Mini 9 as I type this but alas the Alpha version is invite only at this point. So if anyone happens to have a spare invite for Jolicloud please contact me so I can get to reviewing this bad boy. :)
