Hey Verizon, Whoever Made This Is Going To Hell

So wait…  Verizon and Google are proposing this new net neutrality rules that exempt wireless from being neutral because you know “wireless is hard.”

Then they come out with this ad, that says the “air” is free and without prejudice?  really?  cause you would prejudge our data packets on your wireless network would you?   You wouldn’t slow down our sling box packets in favor of the you tube packets google is paying you to put though faster, would you?  Oh wait that’s exactly what exempting wireless from net neutrality would do.

Verizon you are a false lying bunch of lier monkeys…

Facebook places, which rolls out this evening, allows your friends (and only your friends) to tag you when checking into a place, much as they might tag you in a picture. This is terrible!

The First Thing You Should Do With Facebook Places: Don’t Let Other People Tag You

What’s worse than a location based service that lets everyone know when your not home?  A location based service that lets your friends lie about you not being home.

Ok I’m not the biggest Facebook fan, but it’s a thing that everybody uses and I’m not exactly as anti social as I sometimes pretend to be.   Or simply put it has it’s uses.

But the new location based service they are rolling out within Facebook has me nervous.   It used to be that location services like Foursquare or Gowala were opt-in basically because you had to have the right equip[ment and choose to be using the service.  So if you were that savvy to begin with odds are you set up your settings so that you knew what other services that info was being shared with.

But Facebook is a whole other dealamabob.   People use facebook like it was the interent, and unless you have taken the time to think about and set up your privacy, which until recently wasn’t easy to do, odds are you are 100% public.

So not only can anyone look you up by your real name, they can probably see your address and phone number, maybe some pictures of your kids that may or maynot include some items of interest in your house in the background of said pictures.

And now they know weather your home or not, not based on you telling them, but what on your friends might be telling them.

And of course your friends are all 100% honest, and would never say your at the bar or festival when you aren’t, not even as a joke.

So what’s worse than your nice home being robbed while your out?   Well it being robbed while your home of course?

Now calm down, don’t panic this senario isn’t exactly likely, but depending on where you live, who you are, and who your friends are it’s not out of the realm of impossibility either.

I will tell you I upfront, I use a similar location based service called foursquare.   But I don’t broadcast it to the world in where I am, only my friends know, and basically I use it to see where my friends are, or if anyone I know happens to be where I am so I can say hi.

But like I said, it’s a relatively small network compared to facebook, and the fact that the general population uses facebook, leads to, well lets face it a general ignorance as to what they are doing.

If I were you, I would protect myself. Click the link above to head over to the Gizmodo article and follow their directions on how to make sure no one but you can check you in anywhere.   Then it might be time to review your friends list.  I know the temptation to accept all friend requests is out there, but as these services get more and more personal, you really need think about who you are letting have the keys to this real time diary of your life.

ok go back and re-read that title a few times, I know I had to before it sunk in.

Yeah that’s right not an Android tablet, a Google Chrome OS Tablet.

I have been watching the rumors and product announcements for the comming onslaught of Google Android tablets being released this fall, that I nearly forgot that Google still had their other OS, the Chrome OS in development too.

So not only is Google Chrome OS, still alive, and kicking.  It’s actually got some hardware and a mobile carrier, and…  a release date?  Whoa, is that Black Friday, why yes… yes it is.

HTC is building the device, so you know it will be a solid bit of kit, but what do we know about the Chrome OS? Not a whole lot except it’s built around the Chrome browser and clouds based services.

The download squad article linked in the title has a render of what it “might” look like, but that’s little help.   They suspect it will be build on the Tegra 2 platform with a 1280x720 display (720p), 2GB of Ram, and a 32gb ssd (flash disk).  We can also expect WiFi, Blue Tooth, 3G (CDMA), GPS, webcam and perhaps even an SD/USB slot.

This all sounds ideal, especially to someone looking hard at iPad alternatives, but Chrome OS unlike Android is completely unproven in the field.  This had better be one cheap device (on contract or off) to make people want to invest in some new technology at christmas time, in this economy.

I for one am very interested, but….   skeptical.

Call it Motoblur, call it Sense, call it whatever you want — as long as it’s coming preinstalled on Android phones, it’s officially overstayed its welcome.

It’s time for the baked-in Android UI to die - Computerworld Blogs

Here here…  I can’t agree more.  The stock UI from Google is fine, if you manufacturers want to include custome widgets for your customers that’s fine, but an entirely different user interface is not needed.

HTC (Sense) & Motorola (blur) I am looking at you.

I appreciate the concept that the “VTPPF” is trying to uphold in their letter, and allowing the FCC to regulate and enforce network neutrality would certainly be a small expantion of government power, however…

Network Neutrality is all about a free open and unfettered internet, so claiming Net Neutrality is against Free Speech is not helping the Tea Party gain any footing at least with the tech savvy.

Anyway I’m not going to dig into any more of it here, it’s a bit to political for my tastes, but the article by Nicholas Deleon on Crunch Gear is a good place to start if you want to read more.
