Tour: What a $5 GarageBand Artist Lesson Actually... →
Just a quick note to point out that Gizmodo (liked above) has an awesome review of what you actually get when you buy a $5 garage band artist lesson through garage band in iLife 09.
If this is why your buying an upgrade to iLife, or buying a new mac with iLife 09 on it this year, then you will be pleased with what Gizmodo reveals here.
Although I doubt this will replace real one on one lessons,...

iTunes Plus upgrades go à la carte | Playlist |... →
Nice, personally I had no issue with this, since I had been avoiding buying music at the iTunes store while it had DRM on it. So my upgrade cost was under $20. (and it also happened to give me back a few purchases I had lost in some iTunes library movies too, but that’s another article)
But i can imagine those of you who had purchased thousands of dollars in music from iTunes balking a...

Led: New $3 Light Bulb 12 Times More Efficient,... →
The kids over at Cambridge have worked out a new LED light bulb system that doesn’t cost $30 a bulb, like current LED lighting options.
The anticipated cost is somewhere around $3 a bulb. A much more reasonable answer to ugly florescents that plague would be energy saving households now.

And as a bonus these new LED’s avoid all toxic materials.

House fails to pass digital TV delay bill |... →
GOOD!
Look, I understand not everyone is ready for the DTV transition in a few weeks. But this thing is going to be a mess (a necessary mess) whenever it happens. Delaying the switch is only going to add to the confusion.
And I live up in the north east and trust me, with 10 fresh inches of snow on my roof today, this is not the time of year you want people up on roofs installing new...

Notebooks: Dell Mini 9 Has a More Pro Screen Than... →
This news is humorous but a bit bitter sweet for me.
Since I have been sporting a Dell Mini 9 since just before Christmas, I do think it’s very cool that it seems to have a surprisingly accurate color display.
However, being an admitted Apple fanboy it does hurt that the $300 Dell outshines (or in this case out hues) a brand new $2000 MacBook Pro.

Atom-powered MSI WindBOX nearly ready to ride your... →
Now this is a great idea that probably won’t take off. But still a great idea.
Instead of building your low powered netbook style computer into a monitor, make it a a small box that will snap onto the back of any LCD monitor.
Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!
MSI is doing just that. Based on their popular MSI Wind netbook they are cramming the important bits into a small box that...

Is Google working on an official GDrive for cloud... →
Here is an interesting rumor. Google may be working their own cloud storage system for us.
There have been hacks and such for using gmail as a web based storage system for quite a while, but now it looks like there may be a real option from google for just this sort of thing.
Like Gmail and the other google apps I assume it would be free, supported by google advertising.
I’d welcome this...

Life on Mars | Nasa's historic discovery of... →
Morning, everyone. This is RebRob, the Technology Viewer’s resident science editor. A truly fantastic story may be going by the boards today, barely discussed by the media. Seems like they’ve got some big swearing in ceremony to cover or something. Anyway, one of mankind’s most profound and existential questions has been answered by NASA scientists, or at least as close as...

Apple CEO Jobs to Take Medical Leave of Absence -... →
This is just breaking so we have no details and very little in the way of sources, but the WSJ has picked it up and it looks to be legit.
Tim Cook is reportedly taking over day to day operations
Twitter and Friendfeed are reporting that the Apple Stock price has been halted.
This is still developing, watch this space for further updates as I find them.
UPDATE: TUAW has a few more details,...

Apple loosens restrictions on alt web browsers for... →
Interesting… There are now alternatives to mobile Safari in the Apple App Store.
Apple has long stated that there will be no applications that compete with Apple products for the iPhone/Touch in the App Store.
Why the sudden change?
Will this only apply to browsers?
Does this mean Firefox for iPhone is coming?
Obama's FCC Chairman Pick Revealed: Net Neutrality... →
So far, Mr. Obama is living up to his technology promises, at least as much as he can before he is officially the President.
Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!
Obama’s pick for FCC chairman is Julius Genachowski, a man who supports both net neutrality and cheap broadband everywhere.
On paper it looks like a good choice, so I am optimistic.
Here is hoping you live up to my hopes,...

Funny Engadget title aside, this is the beginning of a very cool thing. Mind control interface. Usable for games, but also maybe eventually a replacement for the mouse or even the computer keyboard.
Imagine just thinking about cursor position and and having your display change. Or maybe just thinking about your next target in Halo and having the targeting reticule jump there. No we...
Chrome 2.0 Preview Means Mac, Linux Versions... →
Hoo-fracking-ray!
Chrome has been my favorite browser on Windows since it came out. It has a small footprint, It’s fast, it’s stable, and the built in gears support is just icing on the cake.
But the promised Mac and Linux versions havn’t even been mentioned since launch.
Also in the good news department is early support for Greasmonkey, the user script engine that makes...

Sony is showing of an interesting lil Vaio computer at CES, and the good folks over at Pocketables put their hands and cameras on it for a pretty nice walk through.

It’s like a netbook in that it only has an 8” screen, but unlike a netbook it’s a very low and wide high resolution screen.
That form factor gives it a pretty natural...

Obligitory MacWorld Keynote Address Review.
One last time…
Apple’s last appearance at the MacWorld Show was not as exciting as some hoped, but it wasn’t bad either. Even Mr. Phil didn’t too poorly filling in for his Steveness. So lets look at what I think the highlights are.
Apple Software

Of course this is far from a nail...

VIA's low-power Nano 3000 rumored to rival Intel's... →
Long before the netbook craze took over our gadget luvin souls, there was Via, and their Mini ITX chipset and low powered processors.
I even built a Via based Mini ITX rig that managed to support a 6 on 6 Unreal XMP Match over a cable connection without any lag. Ahh those were the days.
But Intel and their Atom processors have leap froged the Via guys this last year, much to my dismay, but it...
